Interview by Candice Coughlin | HNR Contributing Writer

Sarah Lind, often recognized as the character ‘Jennifer MacMahon’ from the TV series Edgemont, took some time out to chat about acting, being Canadian and falling for Million Dollar Baby actor Jay Baruchel who stars alongside Lind in David Ray’s first feature, Fetching Cody. Lind, who is bound to become a Canadian independent icon and appeared in the film A Simple Curve at the Vancouver International Film Festival, captures the essence of her character Cody from all different stages of her life. The talented Lind plays Cody with such transparencies; there is so much happening beneath sheer body language and dialogue.

Candice: Have you always wanted to be an actor?

Sarah Lind: Yeah for the most part. When I was three I wanted to be a shoemaker and an Indian chief but it started to make sense that I wanted to be an actor.

Candice: How long have you been acting?

Sarah Lind: Professionally, 13 years.

Candice: With the role of Cody in the film, what were you biggest challenges?

Sarah Lind: Playing a drug addict who lives on the street who is a prostitute for a living is very far removed from anything I know in my life. So that was difficult and there wasn’t a lot of time to prepare. I was cast three days before we went to camera so there were a lot of challenges. And also playing through the different stages of her life and going back in time and playing someone younger and older- there were a lot of interesting challenges.

Candice: Are there any parallel’s between you and the character?

Sarah Lind: Yeah, there always are. (laughs)

Candice: What is your ideal film?

Sarah Lind: A beautiful interesting script, working with people I care about, a film that is received well, and that’s made in Canada.

Candice: You’re not really all about the big American blockbusters?

Sarah Lind: I am into the big American films but it is just that I am Canadian and I want to create a strong indigenous film industry here. I would go anywhere with acting but in Canada I would love to do it more.

Candice: Now I was talking to Jay the other day and he mentioned that he has had a crush on you since Edgemont and that it was great to work with you because he has been in love with you forever. So I was wondering if you met on set? (laughs)

Sarah Lind: (laughs)Yeah. We did meet on set. By lunch time on the first day, six hours working together he confessed his love and I shot him down.

Candice: Ouch.

Sarah Lind: (laughs) Yeah, but then a week and a half later I fell for him and now we’re in the thick of it.

Candice: I’m sorry I had to go there. You two just look great together. (laughs)

Sarah Lind: Nah, it’s fine (laughs)

Candice: So, I’ll just to change it up here, no more love talk (laughs)What’s next for you?

Sarah Lind: Writing. Writing and moving to Montreal and studying.

Candice: You plan to keep going with film?

Sarah Lind: Yeah. I’m writing a film and I am working on a stage piece.

Candice: Have you ever done theatre before?

Sarah Lind: Yeah a little bit. I’m really looking forward to it.

Candice: Well Sarah, thank you very much.

Sarah Lind: Thank you.
