Principal photography began January 9 on DreamWorks/Paramount Pictures' big-screen adaptation of Tony Award-winning musical Dreamgirls.

Dreamgirls brings together an ensemble cast including Academy Award winner Jamie "Ray" Foxx, singer Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson, Danny "Lethal Weapon" Glover, Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose, Keith Robinson, Sharon Leal and three-time Tony Award winner Hinton Battle.

Set during the 1960's-70's, Dreamgirls follows the rise of 'Deena', 'Effie' and 'Lorrell' from the girl group 'The Dreamettes'. At a talent competition, they are discovered by manager 'Curtis Taylor, Jr.' (Foxx), who offers them the opportunity to become back-up singers for 'Thunder Early' (Murphy).

Curtis takes control of the girls' look and sound, giving them their own shot in the spotlight as 'The Dreams'. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Though the Dreams become a crossover phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune is far more than they bargained for.

Bill Condon is directing the film from a screenplay he adapted from the stage musical's original book by Tom Eyen.

Dreamgirls will be distributed by DreamWorks, with Paramount handling international. The film is slated for release December 22, 2006.
