'The Coming of Galactus' for Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer prepping August start at Vancouver Film Studios July 2nd 2006 10:01am | Posted by: Michael Stevens, HNR Senior Editor The upcoming Fox/Marvel feature Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer is currently prepping for an August start at Vancouver Film Studios. The sequel to last year's $160 million box office hit will reportedly be an adaptation of the 1966 comic book story arc the "Coming of Galactus" created by writer Stan "The Man" Lee and artist/co-writer Jack "King" Kirby for Marvel Comics' "Fantastic Four" issues #48-#50. According to the stories, the Surfer was astronomer 'Norrin Radd' from the planet 'Zenn-La'. Radd reluctantly agreed to serve as a 'herald' to the world-destroying entity 'Galactus' in order to spare Zenn-La from the god-like creature's insatiable, energy needs. Based on Radd's childhood fantasies, Galactus granted cosmic powers to his new sentinel, complete with indestructible silvery skin and space 'surfboard', enabling Radd to roam star systems as the 'Silver Surfer', searching for new planets for Galactus to consume. But while setting up the Earth for Galactus, Radd is challenged by the "Fantastic Four" and unexpectedly falls in love with 'Alicia Masters', blind daughter of the 'Puppet Master' and girlfriend of hot-tempered 'Ben Grimm', aka 'The Thing'. When the Surfer confronts Galactus as Earth's new protector, Galactus limits the Surfer's cosmic abilities, dooming the 'Sentinel of the Spaceways' to be trapped on the Earth, hemmed in by an unseen force field barrier. The Silver Surfer character was also featured in adaptations of "The Coming of Galactus" in both the 1960's and 1990's Fantastic Four animated series, as well as starring solo in a 1988, cell/CG animated series.
