The Shark is Still Working, an independently-made documentary about Steven Spielberg's classic movie Jaws, could be released on DVD by Universal, according to the film's website.
"...The Shark is Still Working is in the hands of Universal Studios," the producers say on the site. "We know that there have been other Jaws documentaries in the past, and Universal knows it as well. What we are trying to do is show Universal that TSISW is different."
The feature-length documentary examines the effects of the originial Jaws on the movie industry, wider pop culture and human behaviour. A possible cover design for the DVD was published on the film's website in October 2005 (above).
"The movie’s legacy is undeniable and virtually unmatched," says a synopsis on the website. "It jump-started the summer blockbuster phenomenon, not to mention the illustrious career of one Hollywood's most influential directors, Steven Spielberg. Jaws was a thoroughly groundbreaking film in every way imaginable. It had a tremendous impact on the way movies are made, marketed and merchandised and spawned a pop cultural fascination with sharks. And, perhaps most notably, the film generated a visceral fear of swimming that continues to afflict multitudes to this day."
The Shark is Still Working is narrated by Roy Scheider, who played Chief Martin Brody in the original Jaws and Jaws 2. It includes interviews with cast members and filmmakers including Scheider, Steven Spielberg, Richard Dreyfuss, John Williams, Joe Alves, Carl Gottlieb, Lorraine Gary, Bryan Singer, Robert Rodriguez, Eli Roth and Kevin Smith
"TSISW proudly showcases many of the fans, artists, and craftsmen who keep this film alive, examining some of the creative venues through which they express their passion for the film," the synopsis says. "It covers the recent events at Jawsfest'05, celebrating the picture's thirtieth anniversary and highlights Jaws homages and send-ups from pop culture."
To encourage Universal to pick up the documentary, the producers of The Shark is Still Working are asking Jaws fans to show their interest in the production by signing an online petition and visiting the film's MySpace page.
