Penn's other writing credits include Fantastic Four and Elektra. The original 1967 war film was directed by Robert "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" Aldrich from the novel by E.M. Nathanson, starring actors Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Telly Savalas, Charles Bronson and NFL Hall of Famer-turned-actor Jim Brown. The film was a box office success for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and noted as that year's highest-grossing film.
