Photos: The Thing & lots of fire on Burrard Street!
Pictures/Set Report from the finale of Fantastic Four

HNR has been keeping a close eye on the Fantastic Four overnight filming going on at Burrard and Hastings over the last few weeks. Photoboy and Lightdude have been doing their best to capture the action but even with the most pro photo gear it’s hard to get decent nighttime shots from a distance.

But thanks to his pure determination, ability to resist the cold and overall coolness Photoboy was able to snap a few great shots of the The Thing filming a key scene from the film’s finale where the Fantastic Four battle it out with Doctor Doom. Apparently in the scene Doctor Doom manages to get The Thing into the back of a Garbage Truck, resulting in the The Thing smashing his way out the back of the truck in dramatic fashion.

The scenes shot over the last few weeks have been quite intense with explosions and billowing smoke being the norm. One scene involved a Fire Truck crashing with water exploding everywhere...the crane with dripping water bucket can be seen in one of the night time shots we’ve posted. In another scene we’re told Doctor Doom turns out the power in all the nearby buildings and street lights.

We also snapped some shots in the daytime of the decked out area made to look like Madison Avenue in NYC. The Marine Building one of Vancouver’s most historic office buildings (at one point being the tallest building in the British Empire) has been made to look like a retail and residential building called The Gillham; while the Canadian Government Office building at Pender and Burrard is made up to be the Manhattan Center of Performing Arts.

One short set report posted on the HNR boards that gives a good idea of the ferocity of the action follows.

“I was down on the set about an hour ago and there was a car on its side and a bus beside it.

they had a forklift holding up a big concrete divider that they were dropping on the bus…but this did not seem to get the desired look so they swung the divider into the side of the bus...a couple minutes later, they were taking a saw to the side of the bus.”
