Recent reports confirm that director Ridley "Blade Runner" Scott will direct a prequel to his 1979 monster hit Alien.

Screenwriter Jon "Passengers" Spaihts will write the screenplay.

Winning an Academy Award for Visual Effects, Scott's Alien starred actors Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto, based on the premise of an 'alien stow-away' on a spaceship, similar to the 1950's sci fi horror feature It!, The Terror From Beyond Space.

In 2002, Alien was inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for historical preservation as a film which is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", also ranked in 2008, by the American Film Institute as the seventh-best film in the science fiction genre.

The success of Alien launched a media franchise of novels, comic books, video games, toys, three sequel and two prequel films.
