The film is a co-production with Anna Stratton and Robin Cass of Toronto's Triptych Media, Kaurismäki through his Marianna Films and Hank "City Of God" Levine of Berlin's Hank Levine Film. The real Kristina, born into Swedish royalty in 1626, was her father’s only heir, raised as a Prince and educated as a boy. Upon her father's death she took the oath as a king, not a queen and was nicknamed 'Girl King'.
