Full Version: Hyped (or not) movies you 'just didn't get'

Gotta say, there's not many movies out there that i don't like....occasionally, however, i see a movie that EVERYBODY is talking about and i just, quite frankly, don't G-E-T what the hype is about....

So here's my list of big screen disappointments:

1. Napolean Dynamite - I STILL wanna know what i'm missing...think i should give it another chance, but really can't possibly bring myself to sit through it again. Seriously, all the way through, i was trying to figure out if the main character was seriously slow, developmentally challenged, etc..., or if he was just an utter freak of nature. And when i finally figured out he was just a freak (aka, had all his faculties intact), i still felt too guilty to laugh at the poor guy! Had it been a skit, rather than a full-length movie, i think i would have laughed a whole lot more!

2. Battlefield Earth - Oh John...what the heck were you thinking!!! 'nuff said laugh.gif

3. The Beach - Was out of the country and knew nothing about this film until i saw it....loved it until DiCaprio went Psycho, then felt like i was suddenly watching a whole new genre of movie!

4. The Piano - Never made it through the first 1/2 hour...zzzzzzzzzz

5. Lost in Translation - Maybe i just wasn't in the mood...had just seen an action flick in the theater, then rented this...painfully....slow..... Though everyone else i know luved it! Maybe i got another version???

6. Monster's Ball - Another Oscar Buzz movie i had to nail myself to the chair to sit through...

Anyone else been disappointed by movies critics or fans are buzzing about????
shareefdog!
your right about all of them add crash to that list and shrek 2 and id say the last three starwars films but the winner for most overhyped id say would be spiderman the first movie was a chessy love story!!!

Haven't seen Crash yet...i've heard mixed reviews (people seem to either love it or hate it) so am waiting until i'm really, really in the mood for an "odd" movie. Totally agree that Spiderman was overhyped - but then again, gotta say i kinda liked the cheezy love story...awwwww! Hee! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Hm, there have been quite a few hyped up movies that I have watched and thought the same thing," what-the-heck was that?" ...lets' see..off the top of my head I would have to go with "Sideways"...the movie about "whine" as I liked to call it. I think the only thing that I should have done more while watching this movie is drink wine ...maybe every time they made a wine reference in the movie I should have had a sip or 2, just like a drinking game and then the movie would have maybe been more funny. Too bad too because I like Thomas Haden Church.
Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon: wasn't my thing...wasn't into all that tree-flying stuff I suppose.
Moulin Rouge..again wasn't my type of movie although lots enjoyed this one.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind..well just trying to remember the title alone was the start of the downfall for me here..again I enjoy a good Jim Carrey flick but this wasn't it.
Oh and I have to throw in The Life Aquatic with Bill Murray..if you had ever seen the old episodes of Saturday Night Live with the skit with the land shark that comes to the door and eats people well then that is all I could have hoped for to happen in this movie...now that would have been funny, unlike this film was..
"knock, knock"
"who's there?"
sharks' voice
"uh...candy-gram".
"who?"
sharks' voice:
"uh...paperboy"
"you're that land shark aren't you".
sharks' voice:
"uh...telephone repairman..."
character then opens the door and gets eaten by land shark...classic I tell ya..

I'm right with you on Crouching Tiger...what WAS with all the flying??? My friend luved it - i just could't wait for it to end!

I think i'll skip Life Aquatic...i like SNL, but...well...you said it smile.gif smile.gif

Audition.

Several friends of mine who are into Japanese horror went nuts over this movie. I finally got around to seeing it and was left wondering, "Why?" It wasn't a bad movie as such. It starts quite slow and fairly comical then suddenly lets loose with the wierdness, but I just couldn't figure out why it was so highly suggested.

High School Musical. bad acting, bad music, bad dancing I don't understand why kids love it. I think Huges films of the 80's or like Clueless in the 90's were much better. My favorite new teen comedy is TAKING 5 it reminds me of a John Huhges movie or Clueless with Alicia Silverstone. The main characters are hot and the movie is funny. I love the way they dress.
