Knight Rider - Season Three
Review by Ricky Smith | HNR Contributor
The black leather jacket pimp whose cool car and HUGE German following is back in the series that made him famous: Knight Rider.
Before Baywatch, David Hasselhoff’s claim to fame was the lone crusader Michael Knight who along with him and his G-Ride K.I.T.T solved crime after crime making our fictitious streets safer.
Now if you’ve don’t remember the 80’s (and I’m sorry if you don’t because they rocked!) you missed a handful of episodic television shows that centered on a kick ass car and a group of crime solving individuals. Examples: Dukes, Magnum PI, A-Team, Fall Guy. The name of the game was having a cool car and a cool character and you were pretty much guaranteed a four year run on the boob tube.
Knight Rider’s premise is not much different. However, rather then a group of crime fighters there is just one…well, plus the car...which talks! Sounds like a silly concept when you think about it, but I think what excelled for Knight Rider was the dynamic between Michael and the car. The chemistry between the two is remarkable and even though we all know this guy is talking to 3000 pounds of metal, you loose sight of that because of KITT’s human-like emotions and tone. He was somebody we cared for. Now in hindsight I don’t know if it was great writing or exceptional acting that made the show click (maybe it was the surreal aspect that a car could talk) that really made you engage in the problems at hand. It could’ve also been the fact that I was six...Nevertheless.
Season 3 for me is one of my favorites. This is where Knight Rider really hit it’s prime with not only exciting thrill-ride episodes, but they brought back a few recurring characters such as Bonnie that really enhanced the shows storylines. Not to mention KITT’s brand new redesign and the fact they had his evil twin KARR mixed into the storylines. Sounds really goofy when you think about it, but this show is great. I wonder if it would be as successful if it was on today.
My disappointment with DVD collection is with the technical side of things. Although the box says digitally re-mastered, the transfer is suspect at times. The sound is mono and at times KITT’s sound effects are either missing or a hint out of sync. Only two episodes seem intact. Does it diminish the show in anyway? Not really, but I guess I expected a bit more. Plus I believe they’ve removed a few Prince Songs that originally aired with the TV show and aren’t apart of this compilation...Damn music rights!
Special Features: For some reason the DVD comes with the first show of Season 4. Not sure why but it’s kind of cool. I just wish though it may be hard to orchestrate, more fan incentive exclusives. Whether it’s interviews, memorabilia or even bring in the big pimp himself for some exclusives. I just feel a lot of times they rush putting out these DVD’s and don’t understand it’s THE FAN’S who are buying them, so they should cater to them a bit more then the do.
PS: Rumor is they’re close to bringing this to film which could very possibly shoot in our very own VANCITY!
So poof up that hair, head to Danier for a black leather jacket and check Ebay to see what does a 1985 Firebird goes for these days?
