Magnum P.I. - The Complete Third Season
Review by Ricky Smith | HNR Contributor
I’ve got to write this review really quick! You can’t hear it or see it, but my mom’s kicking down the door trying to get her hands on Tom Selleck and this season 3 DVD.
I guess back in the 80’s Tom was THE sex symbol. Today’s version of Brad Pitt. Not that I think Brad’s sexy, but...Hmmm. Awkward. Let's get going on the review.
Thomas Magnum played by the sex symbol himself Tom Selleck (YES MOM, I CALLED HIM A SEX SYMBOL!) Oh god...I hear a power drill!...Plays a detective in Hawaii specializing in cases with missing artifacts, prison escapes and murder. He along with close friends and colleagues TC (Roger Mosely), Rick (Larry Manetti) and the chaperone of the house he lives in; Higgins (John Hellerman). I never got that whole Higgins situation but the parallels between the two always worked and provided numerous laughs and plot twists.
As in every great 80’s show there was a cool car. Magnum was no different. However his cherry red Ferrari was far above the competition from The Dukes, A-Team, Knight Rider and The Fall Guy. Hold on for a sec...Yes mom I know you loved that car! Everyone loved that car! Things are getting antsy around here...Seconds to spare.
Season 3 of the 8 year show was probably one of the best it had to offer. I believe this collection ran during the 82-83 season and has some memorable episodes. Did you see the Sunrise, a two hour story arc that strengthens Magnum’s character using Vietnam War flashbacks and complex twist about a POW camp. Episodes Black on White and Past Tense are highly entertaining and effectively blend mystery and humor making each show a tremendous delight. Oh yeah you’re right mom! Faith and Begorrah was a phenomenal piece as well.
As for the DVD, the transfer quality is pretty solid and the audio is decent. The packaging on the other hand is pretty bunk. I mean I know it was the 80’s and things were cheesy, but we’re past that now. Neon shirts and leg warmers are so out aren’t they? Maybe it’s that psychological trickery so when we see the box, we think about the 80’s and buy the DVD...Either that or Universal needs to fire their DVD art department?
Extra features are suspect as usual. They have the forth season’s first show on here which I guess is suppose to suck you in and buy the next series when it comes out. I thought it was just a feature on Knight Rider, but then I read the A-Team review (which got an unfair 6, VINCE!). Oh god, the A-Team. Face. My mom’s bringing out the chainsaw now…Gotta run! Here you go mom, here’s Tommy for ya! The door bursts open and a snarling, sexually deprived, middle aged woman snatches the DVD set from my hands...Wheew...that was close!
