Strings
Review by Ricky Smith | HNR Contributor

But who controls the strings??? That’s the question you’ll be asking when you watch this film.

Okay, this is a different film. It blows your mind when you see a determined filmmaker telling a different story, in a different way. Course that doesn’t mean it’s a good story.

It’s hard to evaluate this film. On one hand I totally appreciate the care and talents the filmmaker and his crew put into this film. All the characters are PUPPETS! Literally! The sets are fantastic and the camera work/ angles are what you’d see in any other film. I don’t know if the puppets are built to scale, but it’s fantastic. The lighting is top notch, everything is perfect!

On the other hand I didn’t care for the story, the characters and I was always wondering WHO CONTROLS THE STINGS!!! See, it’s a fantasy film and that’s awesome, but I’m a guy who likes plausibility. The film loses me when these puppets go indoors. It’s impossible, isn’t it? Walking through doors, going to the washroom walking for any length of distance…How much slack do they have with these strings? Another aspect that lost me was the birth of these puppets. I don’t know how it happens? It appears that they carve their babies out of wood, but I’m not sure.

So how do I grade this film? Is it worth a look, I don’t know? It is beautifully crafted, lit and filmed but the story takes me nowhere. Major props to the filmmakers but the overall pacing and story really lost me.

AND WHO CONTROLS THE STRINGS?
